Thunder Bay Consolidated Courthouse

This multi-storey building features 15 courtrooms, 4 conference/settlement suites, and Ontario’s first aboriginal conference settlement suite. It is LEED® Silver-certified, with barrier-free design, infrared hearing assistance and barrier-free witness stands and jury boxes.

HH Angus provided electrical engineering design, vertical transportation engineering and lighting design for the 8-storey building (seven above grade and one below grade for parking and holding cells). The electrical design features 100% emergency generator backup, UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and inverter lighting systems.

Lighting design included interior lighting, exterior building perimeter and parking. Exterior lighting was designed to be ‘dark sky compliant’, and all lighting design and luminaires targeted LEED® Silver. Custom lighting was designed for the aboriginal conference settlement suite, and featured low energy metal halide T5 fluorescent uplighting for the domed ceiling surfaces and LED downlights for general lighting.

Vertical transportation systems were designed to provide dedicated service for each of the primary forms of facility traffic: public, private (judicial), prisoner and building services. There are twelve elevators in total, the majority of which are Machine-Room-Less (MRL) gearless traction type. This elevator type represented the latest technological advance for energy efficiency and operational performance for low-to-medium rise buildings. Custom cab finishes for the public and private elevators complement the building’s interior design, while the prisoner elevators include an interior partition for the safe movement of accused by security staff.

Built to last

The Courthouse was a design-build-finance-maintain project, with life-cycle repair and renewal responsibilities that ensure the courthouse (including heating and cooling systems, windows, floors, roofing structures and hard landscaping) is kept in excellent working condition over the 30-year period.

20 King St West, Toronto

Damage Investigation & Remediation

Following a hydro vault explosion and fire at 20 King Street West, HH Angus was engaged to provide consulting services for the subsequent investigation, restoration and rehabilitation of the base building core and shell.

20 King Street West is a 250,000 ft2 office building in Toronto’s downtown core. It consists of 15-storeys above grade, including the mezzanine, truss, upper truss and penthouse, as well as two levels below grade.

HH Angus completed a remediation and renewal of all mechanical and electrical components and major equipment that had been severely contaminated or damaged by the fire.

Teknion

Tenant Office Fitout 

HH Angus’ scope of work required that all design for this ultra modern Toronto office space and showroom target LEED®-CI Gold certification.

A key design challenge for our team was the client’s strong preference for clean ceilings. This meant the design had to minimize conduit runs, devices, etc. Underfloor systems were used in the engineering design to ensure the majority of the mechanical and electrical infrastructure was concealed. The mechanical distribution under the raised floor used Camino systems.

Site-specific design

Our design team was challenged in locating services and systems, given both raised floors and exposed ceilings. The ceilings featured suspended direct/indirect lighting throughout the space.

Statement lighting design

Speciality and decorative lighting played an important role in this project, from selection of fixtures and providing samples and budgets for client approval, to photometrics to meet showroom conditions.

All Seniors Care Living Centres

HH Angus is providing mechanical and electrical engineering and lighting design to greenfield sites in Kingston, Ontario. The seniors’ care facility feature 170 residential units, plus ground-floor amenities including pool, commercial kitchen, gym, and multi-use spaces.

HH Angus has both long standing and recent experience in the retirement and elder care sectors, including long-term care facilities, complex continuing care, dementia centres, seniors’ homes, hospices, and similar facilities that combine a healthcare setting with a residential component. Over the years, we have developed a sensitivity to the design nuances associated with these facilities.

Our scope includes complete design for the building systems, inclusive of generator site services within five feet of the building, plus complete plumbing and HVAC design.

The building has been classified B3 under the Ontario Building Code, an unusual ‘tall building’ designation for a building of this style and height. This OBC classification required additional ventilation options compared to those required for similar mid-rise apartment buildings.

Effective coordination between disciplines was paramount in order to achieve the high ceilings the client desired. We worked closely with the interior design team, structural engineers and architects in order to deliver this design feature for the client.

Ericsson Canada

Global Information, Communications and Technology Centre

HH Angus served as Prime Consultant on Ericsson’s greenfield modular data centre testing facility in Montreal. This was one of three such sites for Ericsson oriented to telecommunications research and development; the first two in Sweden were operational in late 2014. 

As Prime Consultant, HH Angus engaged and oversaw the structural engineers, civil engineers and architect, as well as the noise, vibration and air quality consultants.

The Centre, in Vaudreuil-Dorion, was built with modularity and scalability in mind, and to serve as the global facilities’ data centre.

Situated close to the firm’s R & D Hubs, the new facility was intended to connect 24,000+ Ericsson engineers worldwide, provide greater efficiency in research and development, and allow customers to connect remotely for testing interoperability in real time - for trials, early access, and new business services.

The Quebec site totalled 40,000 m2, of which 20,000 m2 was built out. The project included a 3530 m2 administration and support building. The company estimated that the combination of architecture, design and location would result in a significant reduction of 40% in energy consumption. Heat recovery strategies were implemented, such as waste process heat used to warm the building. In addition, a rainwater harvesting system provided water for both irrigation and process cooling.

One of the key challenges met on this project was managing communications. Four nations were involved (Canada, Sweden, the United States and the United Kingdom), and the team was spread over seven time zones, from Phoenix to Stockholm. While English was the working language of the project team, subgroups within it were variously working in Swedish, French and English.
